To the keen. Student of history, the legalization of GAY MARRIAGES in America should not have come as a surprise. Religious liberty is a key fundamental of the American Government. With religious freedom, comes MORAL FREEDOM.
I have been thoroughly amused, therefore, by calls by some of our politicians who have requested that President Obama to not talk about GAY RIGHTS. We have the audacity to ask the leader of the FREE WORLD, to NOT BE FREE!
Voltaire observed that, 'I disapprove what you say, but I will defend to the death, your right to say it' George Washington said, 'If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.'
John F. Kennedy, 'The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it...' I am often miffed at our fearful failure to appreciate the philosophical foundations of modern states. Especially, by a Politician.
Freedom of speech, is the mother of all freedoms! Man is not born dumb! Benjamin Franklin therefore observed that, 'Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech.'
Freedom, moral or otherwise is a double edged sword, and with it we must apply the GOLDEN RULE. Whatsoever freedom we desire, we must give also. What freedom is good for myself is also good for my neighbor.
Nelson Mandela therefore observed that, 'For to be free is not merely to cast of one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.' We must not like how others think, talk, or act.
It is freedom which makes AMERICA GREAT. AMERICA IS because SHE IS FREE. And in a free society, we must not like nor are forced to like how our fellow beings think and act, NO! Freedom allows everyone to be their OWN PERSON. And no nation can be great that does not make men FREE.
